Jehovah Ezer, The Lord Our Help

March 30, 2017

We wait on the Lord; he is our help and our shield.

Psalm 33:20

Asa became the third king of the southern kingdom of Judah. He reigned from 910-869BC. In the beginning, Asa was a good king. He removed all the worship of false gods and the Lord blessed him with peace and victory over his enemies. One such battle was against the Ethiopian leader, Zerah, who attacked Judah with more than a million troops. King Asa had a large army, but not anywhere near as large as Zerah’s. Asa cried out to the Lord and said, “O LORD, no one but you can help the powerless against the mighty! Help us, O LORD our God, for we trust in you alone. It is in your name that we come against the vast horde. O LORD, you are our God; do not let mere men prevail against you!”  (2 chronicles 14:11).  The LORD honored that prayer and destroyed Zerah’s vast army.  No man can prevail against God.

This story shows us that the battle we are fighting, and is too hard for us alone, is not too hard for our God. Sometimes the only thing we can say is “Help LORD!”. Our God, who is Jehovah Ezer is listening. This is what He says to us:

God is our refuge and strength,

A very present help in trouble.

Psalm 46:1 (NASB)

The Hebrew word, “Ezer” means “help”. It’s the idea that God helps us in our battles that are too difficult for us. We have battles in this world, with our flesh, and we have an unseen enemy that tries to convince us he is too powerful for us. And he is, when we try to fight him on our own, but with God, all things are possible (Mt. 19:26); nothing is too hard for Him (Jer. 32:27).

Deuteronomy 33:26-27 is a good example of God as Jehovah Ezer. “There is no one like the God of Israel. He rides across the heavens to help you; across the skies in majestic splendor. The eternal God is our refuge, and his everlasting arms are under you. He drives out the enemy before you; he cries out ‘Destroy them!’ “ Wow! This sounds exactly what God did for King Asa.

David was another king that relied on God for His help. Often! The following verses all use the Hebrew word, Ezer.

But as for me, I am poor and needy; please hurry to my aid, O God.

You are my helper and my Savior; O LORD, do not delay.

Psalm 70:5

O Israel, trust the LORD! He is your helper and your shield.

Psalm 115:9

My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth!

Psalm 121:2

Since Ezer is a Hebrew word, we don’t find it in the New Testament. But we do find the Greek word, boetheo, which means “to come to the aid of”. It is found in Matthew 15:25, when the Gentile woman didn’t give up asking for Jesus to heal her demon-possessed daughter, “But she came and worshipped him, pleading again, ‘LORD, help me!’’ “ and again in Mark 9:22 when a man brought his demon-possessed son to the disciples and they were unable to cast the demon out. When Jesus arrived, the man said, “Have mercy on us and help us if you can.” And Jesus replied in v.23, “What do you mean, ‘If I can? Anything is possible if a person believes.’ “

Another verse is Hebrews 13:6, “So we can say with confidence, ‘The LORD is my helper, so I will have no fear. What can people do to me?’ ” The Greek word here is boetheia, and has the idea of holding something together with ropes or cables. We find this same Greek word for “help” in Acts 27:17 when Paul gets caught in a storm and their ship was blown out to sea. They were not able to control where it was going. “Then the sailors bound ropes around the hull of the ship to strengthen it…”  We can say with confidence that the LORD will hold us together. We can cry out for His help and He will come to our aid. We will wait on our Jehovah Ezer.
