From Darkness to Light

September 1, 2016

Even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will

shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.

Psalm 139:12

People who live in darkness don’t know what to do with the light. Some are attracted to it but not comfortable with it. Others want nothing to do with the light. Jesus is the light of the world and when Jesus lives in us, we are the light of the world also.

Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.

John 3:19

I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.

John 8:12

You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

Matthew 5:14-16

In the beginning, God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness (Gen. 1:3).  We know from experience that light expels the darkness. Every time we turn on a light in a dark room, the darkness vanishes. There is the physical light that we see every day when the morning comes or we turn on a light. And there is the light that is spiritual. When we say our prodigals are walking in darkness, we mean spiritually speaking. Spiritually, light exposes the darkness as well. Go back to John 3:19 where it says that men loved the darkness. That’s why the light is uncomfortable or undesirable. So we must accept the fact that our prodigals may not be attracted to the light that is in us. As we pray and as God is working, He is bringing them closer to the light. He is exposing them to it and over time they become more accustomed to it and it becomes more attractive. It is important that we who have the light living in us, let it shine. It’s not as easy as flipping a switch…it requires that we stay connected to the Light so what we say and do is reflecting the Light. When we do things in our own strength, we risk doing the opposite of what God is doing. When we stay connected to the Light, we can be assured that what we say and do is reflecting the Light.

You are my lamp, O Lord; the Lord turns my darkness into light.

2 Samuel 22:29

For you have delivered me from death and my feet from stumbling, that I may walk before God in the light of life.

Psalm 56:13

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.

Isaiah 9:2

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.

Ephesians 5:8

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that

you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

1 Peter 2:9
