Why Jesus Said He Came and Was Sent to This World

And this is the way to have eternal life--to know you, the

only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth.

John 17:3 (NLT)

I wanted to share with you, in the words of Jesus, why He said He came to this world. I know there are many more reasons mentioned in Scripture, but sometimes I think it's interesting to simply focus on what Jesus said. I've named sixteen.

1. TO DO THE WILL OF THE FATHER

"My food," said Jesus, "is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work." John 4:34 (NIV)

I can do nothing on my own. I judge as God tells me. Therefore, my judgment is just, because I carry out the will of the one who sent me, not my own will. John 5:30 (NLT)

For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. John 6:38 (NASB)

2. TO SAVE SINNERS

But go and learn what this means: 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners." Matthew 9:13 (NIV)

On hearing this, Jesus said to them, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners." Mark 2:17 (NIV)

For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost." Luke 19:10 (NIV)

For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. John 3:17 (NIV)

3. TO BE A LIGHT

I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness. John 12:46 (NIV)

4. TO TESTIFY TO THE TRUTH

"You are a king, then!" said Pilate. Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me." John 18:37 (NIV)

5. TO GIVE ETERNAL LIFE

"As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats Me, he also will live because of Me." John 6:57 (NASB)

I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world." John 6:51 (NIV)

6. TO PREACH THE TRUTH

But Jesus answered, “Let us go on to the neighboring towns so I can preach there as well, for that is why I have come.” Mark 1:38 (BSB)

7. TO BRING JUDGMENT

I have come to ignite a fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled! Luke 12:49 (BSB)

Jesus said, “For judgment I came into this world, that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.” John 9:39 (ESV)

8. TO GIVE HIS LIFE A RANSOM FOR MANY

"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many." Mark 10:45 (NASB)

“Now my soul is deeply troubled. Should I pray, ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But this is the very reason I came! John 12:27 (NLT)

9. TO FULFILL THE LAW AND THE PROPHETS

"Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them." Matthew 5:17 (NIV)

10. TO SERVE

"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many." Mark 10:45 (NASB)

11. TO BRING A SWORD

"Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to turn "'a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law--" Matthew 10:34-35 (NIV) Also see Luke 12:51-53

12. TO PROCLAIM FREEDOM FOR THE PRISONERS

"The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free," Luke 4:18 (NIV)

13. TO PROCLAIM RECOVERY OF SIGHT TO THE BLIND

"The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free," Luke 4:18 (NIV)

14. TO SET THE OPPRESSED FREE

"The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free," Luke 4:18 (NIV)

15. TO PROCLAIM THE YEAR OF THE LORD'S FAVOR

"to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." Luke 4:19 (NIV)

16. TO THE LOST SHEEP OF ISRAEL

He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel." Matthew 15:24 (NIV)

Also see Jeremiah 50:6; Ezekiel 34:23-24; Micah 5:4-5 and Got Questions

Jesus did indeed accomplish everything He came to do. Listen to what He says to the Father in John 17:4-8:

  • I brought glory to you here on earth by completing the work you gave me to do

  • I have revealed you to the ones you gave me from this world

  • I have passed on to them the message you gave me

Soon after that prayer, Jesus died on the cross and three days later, rose again. He paid the price God demanded for sin that we could never pay. And anyone who believes that Jesus, the sinless son of God, is the only one who is able to give you eternal life, will be saved. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, no one comes to the Father except through Him. (John 14:6)
