The Faithfulness of God

Because of the Lord's great love we are not
consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are
new every morning; great is your faithfulness.
Lamentations 3:22-23
Jeremiah was devastated by the destruction of Jerusalem. God had allowed it because of their sin. Hadn't he warned the people over and over? Why didn't they listen? Now it was too late. Almost everyone was gone; either taken away into exile or dead. Only a few managed to escape. It was too much. Hope was gone.
Can you relate in some way to Jeremiah? Not because you have seen the death of your nation, though some people have, but because you have experienced tragedy that shook you to the core. You can identify with Jeremiah when he says in Lamentations 3:17-18, "I have been deprived of peace; I have forgotten what prosperity is. So I say, 'My splendor is gone and all that I had hoped from the Lord.' "
And when Jeremiah is about to be consumed, he recalls the Lord's faithfulness, and it brings him hope. Jeremiah knows the Lord is good to those who depend on Him; he understands that waiting quietly for God's salvation is best.
God is faithful. He cannot be anything else. When God says He will do something, He will. When He tells you a particular thing will happen, you can know it will take place. It's always been this way from eternity past and will always remain this way forever. God doesn't have to work at being faithful; He is faithful. It's who He is. God is steadfast, reliable, and unwavering. If even one time He were unfaithful, He would not be God. No human is faithful one-hundred percent of the time. God is the only One who can be trusted completely.
God never changes, and it's impossible for Him to lie. He has never failed, and He won't start now. It's good to remember the things God has done in the past. Remembering can bring hope when you thought hope was lost. Hanging on to God's promises is important. He often highlights a promise from His Word, and He wants you to hold on to it until it is fulfilled. Write it down; speak it out loud; carry it in your heart believing that God is faithful to do what He says He will do. Nowhere does Scripture tell us we will understand everything beforehand or that God will let us know when and how He will fulfill the promise or resolve the situation. That's the part that takes faith. And even when we are unfaithful, He remains faithful.
Today, you may be grieving, and that's okay. God knows your heart and what you are going through. But when you start to lose hope in God, it's time to remember His faithfulness. How has God's faithfulness sustained you in the past?
God is not a man that he should lie, nor a son of man,
that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then
not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?
Num. 23:19
Know therefore that the Lord your God id God; he is the faithful
God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations
of those who love him and keep his commands.
Deut. 7:9
For the word of the Lord is right and true; he is faithful in all he does.
Ps. 33:4
I say to myself, "The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him." The Lord is good to those who hope in him, to the one who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.
Lam. 3:24-26
But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen
and protect you from the evil one.
2 Thess. 3:3
Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we
profess, for he who promised is faithful.
Heb. 10:23
