A Mighty Warrior

The Lord is a warrior:

The Lord is His name.

Exodus 15:3

We read about God leading the Israelites out of Egypt where they were in bondage. These were His chosen people. How it must hurt His heart to see them suffering. But He had a plan and He was waiting for the right time. God had used Joseph many years earlier to be the second in command in Egypt during a great famine, but now this new king knew nothing of Joseph. All he knew was the Israelites were great in number and they filled the land. There were more Israelites in Egypt then there were Egyptians. The king was afraid they were becoming too powerful and if war broke out, they would side with the enemy and find a way to escape Egypt. So the Egyptians made the Israelites slaves. But this didn’t hinder their growth and the Egyptians became afraid and worked them harder. Finally, the king ordered that all Israelite baby boys be murdered. Moses was born during this time and we read the miraculous story of how he was not only saved, but saved by the Pharaoh’s daughter. He was brought up in the palace and received an education that he would not have received otherwise. This prepared him for the plan God had for him. But it would still be several years before Moses was ready. Moses knew who he was and chose to identify with his own people. Unfortunately, this led him to take matters into his own hand and he killed an Egyptian when he saw him beating an Israelite. The next day when he found out someone had seen him do it, he ran.

It would be 40 years before God would come to Moses in the burning bush to tell him of his plan to rescue his people. This is when we begin to see the power of God on display through miracle after miracle. A new Pharaoh had come into power by this time and his only goal was to keep the Israelites as slaves. He thought he didn’t have to listen to Moses or this God he spoke of. We know how it ends. God wins! The people are rescued and they know it was God who did it. So they sang him a song of praise (Exodus 15:1-18).

Our God is a warrior. We see it throughout the Bible, especially in the Old Testament. Listen to what the Bible says:

Who is this King of glory? The Lord, strong and mighty; the Lord invincible in battle.

Ps. 24:8 NLT

The Lord will march forth like a mighty hero; he will come out like a warrior,

full of fury. He will shout his battle cry and crush all his enemies.

Isaiah 42:13 NLT

When Jesus returns, we will see Him as a Warrior.

Then I saw heaven opened, and a white horse was standing there. Its rider was named Faithful and True, For he judges fairly and wages a righteous war. His eyes were like flames of fire, and on his head were many crowns…On his robe at his thigh was written this title: King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

Revelation 19:11-12,16 NLT

We can count on our Mighty Warrior God to defend us, to fight our battles. We need only to do what He asks us to do. Is He asking you to stand still and watch Him deliver you or your prodigal like He told the Israelites when they were being pursued by the Egyptians at the Red Sea? God parted the sea while they just stood there. Is He asking you to march around the walls of their resistance through prayer and singing as he did with Joshua and the Israelites before the walls of Jericho fell? Is He asking you to proclaim His power and might as David did before he defeated Goliath? What is God asking you to do? The battle may be raging but God is our strong tower and the righteous run to Him and are safe 9 (Proverbs 18:10).

I am so glad that God is a mighty warrior and that He is fighting my battles…battles of impatience, confusion, and letting Him fight for me. Our prodigals need a mighty warrior who will fight for them and hallelujah, that's what our God is!

You call us out from the depths Into Your freedom Our chains are gone No weapon formed shall prevail Your word is stronger We overcome

Your glory resounds through the age All saints declaring Your great renown Your Kingdom forever will stand We won't be shaken We will not fear

Our God, a mighty warrior You're a consuming fire In victory You reign We triumph in Your name Jesus, the great commander You conquered death forever In victory You reign We triumph in Your name

And we declare Your name is power Exalted One no name is higher You stand alone our strong defender Above You there's no other, above You there's no other

And we declare Your name is power Exalted One no name is higher You stand alone our strong defender Above You there's no other, above You there's no other Above You there's no other, above You there's no other
