Jesus, The Bread of Life
I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go
hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.
John 6:35
Jesus is the Bread of Life. When Jesus made this claim, He had just fed the five thousand. The people wanted to make Him King. They wanted a bread King…they wanted another miracle, but Jesus turned the conversation in a different direction, claiming to be the Bread of Life. They didn’t understand because they took what he said literally. Jesus wasn’t talking about physical hunger, but of spiritual hunger. I am so thankful that Jesus sustains me!
The people could only see the physical but Jesus knew what was in their hearts. When he spoke, he cut through their words and revealed their motives for seeking after Him. Jesus had revealed Himself as the Bread of Life back in Capernaum when He had fed the five thousand, but the people couldn’t see it. They wanted the sensational. They wanted to have an easy life, one where King Jesus would give them whatever they asked for. When they found out this wasn’t part of the plan, they walked away. They didn’t want Jesus as the Bread of Life, the One who could satisfy their souls. Somewhere in this type of thinking, we will find our prodigals.
Physical food satisfies our bodies, but spiritual food satisfies our souls. It lasts forever! The things of this world make us a happy for a little while just like food satisfies our bodies for a little while. But a few hours later, that satisfaction has worn off and we want something else…be it food or another thing this world has to offer. That’s why we need what Jesus has to offer in this life, because it is what will last.
Jesus promises to meet our daily needs for food and clothing as we trust in Him, but this isn’t what He wants our focus to be. He wants our focus to be on Him. He is the One who gives eternal life, He is the One who satisfies our souls, He is the One who breaks the chains that bind us and keep us from seeing what really matters, and He is the One who is with us. All power and authority have been given to Him in heaven and on earth (Mt. 28:18).
This is so comforting when dealing with our prodigals. If we look at where they are rather than on where Jesus sees them, we will feel hopeless or discouraged. But if we keep our focus on Jesus, our Bread, we will begin to see things from His perspective. So keep on declaring truth and watch your negative words fall to the ground. They have no power because truth is what Jesus says it is. Each day is new and each day is a chance to win the battle we face that day. Don’t give ground to the enemy by focusing on your own strength; rather focus on the One who gives strength. His name is JESUS!
So this Thanksgiving, give thanks for your many blessings for sure, but don’t forget to include Jesus, your bread. He is truly Someone to be thankful for. As you are eating turkey and all the fixings, be reminded that Jesus is the Bread of Life. That your dinner will fill you up and satisfy you for a little while, but Jesus is the only One who can satisfy you forever.
