Good, Good Father
As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the Lord is flawless.
He is a shield for all who take refuge in him.
Psalm 18:30
For who is God besides the Lord? And who is the Rock except our God? It is God who arms us with strength. It is God who makes our way perfect. He makes us as surefooted as a deer, enabling us to stand on mountain heights. It is God who trains our hands for battle; who strengthens our arms to draw a bow of bronze. (from Psalm 18:31-34) This passage always reminds me of a book I read a while ago called, Hinds Feet on High Places by Hannah Hurnard. It’s a story about a shepherdess names Much-Afraid who is in the service of the Chief Shepherd, who is Jesus. She is invited to go to the high places with Him. This allegory is the story of her journey through the difficult places. She has two companion, Sorrow and Suffering. But as she learns to trust the loving Shepherd, she is transformed. She receives a new name. She is enabled to stand on the mountain heights like a deer’s feet running on the mountain tops. It is based on the Song of Solomon.
Sometimes we need to be reminded of the Father’s love and the tenderness of our Shepherd, Jesus. The Father does not want us to lose any battles. David sang this song to the Lord on the day the Lord rescued him from all his enemies and from Saul. David surely knew how good the Father was. For a time, it may have seemed like God had abandoned him because evil was winning everywhere he looked. But David’s faith sustained him. David’s relationship with God kept his hope alive. He knew the Father intimately.
Our prodigals do not know the Father in this way. They do not know His goodness. I don’t know if they are like Much-Afraid or if they running as fast as they can in the opposite direction. But they cannot outrun the Father. No matter where they go, He is there. His love is waiting and pursuing. It may seem like He has abandoned us because they are still running; they are still living in fear or rebellion. Our prayers seem to go unanswered. Someday they will see this. His love is greater than their fears or anger or complacency. He is a good, good Father. Someday they will hear Him whispering their name. He is telling them how much he loves them. He is inviting them to go to the high places. It won’t matter what they have done.
Keep praying, dear prayer warriors. God will sustain you. He is with you wherever you are. He is strengthening you for the battle. He is making your feet as surefooted as the deer on the mountains. He is so good. He is perfect in all of His ways. His timing is perfect. His plans are good for you and for your prodigal. They belong to Him. He has got this.
The Lord God is my strength. And He has
made my feet like hinds feet and makes
me walk on my high places.
Habakkuk 3:19 NASB
I would encourage to close your eyes and begin worshipping the Father and thanking Him. He is your Papa. Then choose one of the things that you are thankful for and write a love letter to God. Read it out loud to Him. Now let God write a love letter back to you. Just start writing whatever comes to your mind. Don’t stop writing until the words stop coming. Don’t think, just write. Now read it out loud. This is what God is saying to you. If this is hard for you, don’t give up. God is always speaking and you can learn to hear what He is saying. I’m telling you, there is nothing like the love of the Father. He is a good, good Father.
I've heard a thousand stories of what they think You're like But I've heard the tender whisper of love in the dead of night And You tell me that You're pleased and that I'm never alone You're a good, good father it's who You are it's who You are it's who You are And I'm loved by You it's who I am it's who I am it's who I am I've seen many searching for answers far and wide But I know we're all searching for answers only You provide 'Cause You know just what we need before we say a word You are perfect in all of Your ways You are perfect in all of Your ways You are perfect in all of Your ways to us Love so undeniable I, I can hardly speak Peace so unexplainable I, I can hardly think As You call me deeper still As You call me deeper still As You call me deeper still Into love, love, love
