From Darkness to Light
Open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.
This is what Jesus said to Saul on the road to Damascus. Saul had been persecuting Christians and really believed he was doing the right thing. He was a Pharisee out to destroy the church. He was as passionate about destroying the church as he later was about building the church. After he had a personal encounter with Jesus Christ, he dedicated the rest of his life to proclaiming Jesus as Savior.
Today this is a verse we pray for our prodigals or unsaved people in our lives. This is what Jesus did for us at some point. He rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves (Colossians 1:13). Many of our prodigals are in the kingdom but choosing to live in darkness. Some are not yet in the kingdom. They all have been deceived by the enemy and don’t recognize the darkness. We pray and proclaim:
Awake. O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will give you light.
Ephesians 5:14 NLT
Listen to some of the words from Phil Wickham’s song, Your Love Awakens Me
There were walls between us, by the cross you came and broke them down, You broke them down
There were chains around us, by your grace we are no longer bound, no longer bound
You called me out of the grave, You called me into the light You called my name and then My heart came alive
Your love is greater, Your love is stronger Your love awakens, awakens, awakens me
Feel the darkness shaking, all the dead are coming back to life, back to life
Hear the song awaken, all creation singing we’re alive, 'cause you're alive
Let’s not only pray, but let’s proclaim that the darkness is shaking and our prodigals are coming back to life. We know that Jesus’ love is greater and stronger than the darkness and it has the ability to awaken hearts. Jesus, call ______ name and awaken his/her heart today…bring ______ back to life…open his/her eyes to the light.
The people who sat in darkness have seen a great light. And for those
who lived in the land where death casts it’s shadow, a light has shined.
Matthew 4:16 NLT
That light is Jesus. He is the only One who can awaken their hearts to see Him.
Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me,
you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.
John 8:12 NLT
Darkness resists God. God created the light and it dispelled the darkness…first in Genesis and then again when He sent Jesus to earth. One was physical light and One was spiritual light.
In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.
John 1:4-5 NASB
For God, who said, “Let there be light in the darkness,” has made this light shine in our hearts
so we could know the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ.”
2 Corinthians 4:6
Jesus, the light lives in us. We have been awakened. Use us for Your purposes. Bring other believers into _______ life who live by the light (Ephesians 5:1-14) and will love him/her. Use the light in them and us to awaken _______ heart and bring him/her back out of the darkness and into the light!
